Hi, an excellent alternative to Viola's book is "<a href="http://www.morethancake.org/2008/02/when-church-was-family.html" rel="nofollow">The Ancient Church As Family</a>" by Dr. Joe Hellerman. His work is well researched and addresses many of the "pagan" influences on our faith. Dr. Hellerman's contribution is a blend of good history AND respectful discourse.

Matthew, that's a good question. I really appreciate that you have spun out the complexity of the problem also. it really is systemic. Sometimes I think I expected my church to solve all this for me, when it came back to looking at my own home and my own commitment and skill as a father. But when we participate in so much brokenness -- in our neighborhood, town, country and world and in our own families and extended families -- solutions elude us and we end up where we should be .. on our knees.

As for models, my love and respect for Brian McLaren continues to increase. He models for me what I have always seen in Paul - strength, but great vulnerability and humility.
